Quick answer
Most CrossFitters own two pairs: a cross-trainer for WODs and a lifter for heavy strength and Olympic lifting. Best lifter for CrossFit: Nike Savaleos (lighter, 15 mm heel, wide toe box). For serious Olympic lifting days: Nike Romaleos 4.
CrossFit throws everything at your feet in one session: box jumps, rowing, short runs and then a heavy clean. No single shoe is great at all of that. Lifters are stiff with a raised heel, which is perfect for snatches and squats and terrible for running. Cross-trainers are flatter and flexible, which is the opposite.
Lifter or trainer? A simple rule
My rule of thumb: heavy strength or Olympic lifting block, wear lifters. Mixed WOD with running, jumping or rope climbs, wear trainers, even if there’s a light barbell in it. The awkward middle (lots of moderate cleans or overhead squats and no running) is where a lighter 15 mm lifter makes sense.

Best lifter for CrossFit
Nike Savaleos
- Heel height15–15.5 mm
- ClosureLaces + 1 strap
- FitWide toe box; some say it runs small
- Best forBeginners, budget
For a CrossFitter, the Savaleos makes a lot of sense. The 15 mm heel is less extreme than full Olympic shoes, so it feels more natural if you end up doing a few non-lifting movements in it. The wide toe box helps on landings and the price means you’re not babying it. Under very heavy singles it’s a bit soft.
Pros
- Lower, friendlier heel
- Affordable
- Wide toe box
Cons
- Softer under max lifts
Best for Olympic lifting days
Nike Romaleos 4
- Heel height20 mm (0.79")
- Weight~19 oz (US 10.5)
- ClosureLaces + 2 straps
- FitWide, flat base; true to size for most
- Best forOlympic lifts, heavy squats
When the programming is a heavy snatch or clean & jerk session, nothing on this list is more stable than the Romaleos 4. It’s heavy and stiff, so change out of it before the conditioning piece.
Pros
- Top-tier stability
- Two straps
Cons
- Heavy
- Not for WODs
Best budget
Adidas Powerlift 5
- Heel height15 mm (0.59")
- ClosureLaces + 1 strap
- FitNarrow-ish
- Best forBeginners, powerlifting
If you mainly want a lifter for back squats and strength days, the Powerlift 5 does the job without the premium price. Its 15 mm heel is a comfortable step up from a flat trainer.
Pros
- Affordable
- Stable
Cons
- Narrow-ish fit

Our verdict
Keep your trainers for WODs. Add a Savaleos for lifting.
It’s the most flexible lifter for a CrossFit schedule. If your box programs a lot of heavy Olympic lifting, the Romaleos 4 is worth it.
FAQ
Can I do CrossFit WODs in weightlifting shoes?
Only WODs without running or jumping. Lifters are stiff and heavy, so they’re uncomfortable and less safe for running, box jumps and double-unders.
Do I need lifting shoes for CrossFit?
Not to start. But if you squat and Olympic lift regularly, a lifter will help your positions and stability on heavy days.
What heel height is best for CrossFit?
A lower heel around 15 mm is easier to live with in a CrossFit class. Go to 20 mm if you specialize in Olympic lifting.
